CALIX (Creative Automation Lab for Industrial X-factors) is a research and innovation laboratory based within the School of Engineering and Physical Sciences at the University of Lincoln, focused on accelerating the transition of traditional manufacturing systems into intelligent, connected, and future-ready industrial ecosystems.
The lab was established to bridge the gap between academic innovation and real-world industrial deployment by developing practical, scalable, and commercially relevant Industry 4.0 and Industry 5.0 solutions for modern manufacturing environments.
At the core of CALIX is a strong commitment to supporting small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), recognising that many organisations face significant barriers in adopting advanced digital technologies due to cost, complexity, skills shortages, and integration challenges. CALIX addresses these challenges through applied research, industrial collaboration, and demonstrator-driven innovation that enables companies to explore digital transformation in an accessible and low-risk manner.
The laboratory specialises in areas including industrial automation, smart manufacturing, AI-driven inspection systems, machine vision, predictive maintenance, digital twins, Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT), edge computing, augmented reality-assisted maintenance, and sustainable manufacturing systems. Through the integration of sensing technologies, intelligent analytics, and real-time monitoring platforms, CALIX develops systems capable of improving productivity, enhancing process visibility, reducing waste, and enabling data-driven operational decision-making.
A key philosophy of CALIX is the retrofitting and enhancement of existing industrial infrastructure rather than complete replacement. This enables manufacturing organisations to modernise legacy systems incrementally while maximising return on investment and minimising operational disruption. The lab’s work therefore focuses heavily on practical deployment pathways, human-centred automation, and scalable industrial solutions that can be adopted by SMEs across multiple sectors.
The laboratory has already developed several emerging smart manufacturing demonstrators and research concepts, including Digifacturing, Digi-INSPECT-R, Discam, which are CALIX’s quality inspection frameworks, and digitally connected manufacturing demonstrators. These systems explore how AI, machine vision, automation, and digital connectivity can be combined to create adaptive and intelligent manufacturing environments capable of supporting future industrial needs. CALIX’s Digifacturing demonstrator received national recognition through the Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE) Mechatronics competition, reinforcing the lab’s growing profile within the UK smart manufacturing ecosystem.
CALIX works closely with industrial collaborators, technology providers, and academic researchers to ensure that innovation is both technically rigorous and commercially meaningful. One such collaboration is with Zeta Dynamics Ltd, a specialist engineering consultancy focused on process engineering, process optimisation, simulation, and sustainable industrial solutions. Together, CALIX and Zeta Dynamics combine academic research expertise with industrial engineering experience to support organisations seeking practical digital transformation strategies.
This partnership represents a powerful combination of research-led innovation and industrial problem-solving capability. While CALIX contributes expertise in intelligent automation, AI integration, digital manufacturing systems, and industrial demonstrators, Zeta Dynamics brings strengths in process design, engineering consultancy, simulation, and industrial implementation. The collaboration enables both organisations to support manufacturers through feasibility studies, technology development, industrial trials, optimisation studies, and future commercial deployment activities.
At Smart Manufacturing Week at the NEC Birmingham, CALIX and Zeta Dynamics Ltd are jointly showcasing how collaborative innovation between academia and industry can help SMEs improve resource efficiency, reduce operational waste, enhance process visibility, and unlock the benefits of smart manufacturing technologies. Through live demonstrations, interactive discussions, and industrial case studies, the partnership aims to show that advanced digital manufacturing solutions are no longer limited to large corporations, but can also be practical, scalable, and economically viable for SMEs across the UK manufacturing sector.
